Y'all asked for information technology.  So it makes its return.  The 'x on ten' feature ranks the x best albums in an creative person's discography and I make ten statements well-nigh those albums.

This was the most popular feature in the early days of the blog and a feature that I go asked to resurrect.  2022 volition bring new 'ten on ten' features along with revisiting older 'x on ten' features with artist'southward that have released newer albums since their original posting.

This '10 on ten' mail features the ten best albums from the Galileans.  The Galileans were the most successful, all Hispanic member, group in the history of Southern Gospel music.  The group was composed of the DeLaTorre brothers along with David Velasquez.  Their recording career spanned the 1970's and the Galileans won the Dove Award for about promising new gospel creative person in 1970.

The Galileans ten best albums are as follows:

  • It is no coincidence that the year the Galileans won the Dove Award for most promising new artist is the year they release their best anthology; Today (1970).
  • Today features many songs that are at present considered Southern Gospel classics.  Their cut of the Gordon Jensen penned, "Redemption Draweth Most", would be the version that would accept the near chart success.  The album besides independent one of the commencement cuts of the now quartet archetype, "Plan Of Salvation".
  • The Galileans biggest song of their career was the title track of the 1978 album, "He's Coming Back Again".  This top five striking single remained in the charts in to 1980.

  • As I mentioned in the intro, the Galileans have been the most successful, all Hispanic member, group in the history of Southern Gospel music.

***Adjacent UP ON TEN ON TEN:  McGRUDERS***

Hall of Fame (350x202)It is time for me to honor another of Southern Gospel'south greatest compositions by placing it into the Southern Gospel song hall of fame.

Today'due south inductee dates back to 1966, the earliest known recording of the vocal by Gary McSpadden.  The only other creative person to record "Plan Of Conservancy" during this era was the Galileans on their 1970 album, Today.

The song hit the Southern Gospel mainstream when the Cathedrals recorded information technology on their 1986 anthology, Main Builder.  It immune George Younce to showcase his bass voice and the song has since been used by quartets for that very reason.

Ruby Moody penned "Program Of Salvation"; this now Southern Gospel quartet archetype.

I decided to go back through Southern Gospel awards history to determine how many new artist of the twelvemonth award winners went on to accept lengthy careers.  I used both early Dove Laurels and Singing News Fan Award winners in this feature.  The first Dove Awards program occurred in 1969 and the Singing News didn't start awarding new groups until 1988.

The Dove Awards gave abroad their first most promising new Gospel talent in 1970.  Picking up the trophy was the Galileans.  The Galileans were based out of Texas and had a adept run during the 1970's.  They were the start artist to tape songs in Spanish alongside other songs on their recording.  The group would exist remembered for songs such as "A Way To Cross Over", "Built-in Again Children", "Born In The Spirit", "He's Coming Back Again", "I'thou On Tour", "Permit The World Go By", "Lite On The Shore", "Me And Jesus", "Plan Of Conservancy", "Plenty Of Fourth dimension" and "Redemption Draweth Nigh".

The Dove Awards had no programme in 1971 due to controversy merely returned in 1972 when London Paris and the Apostles nabbed most promising new Gospel talent.  London is near remembered for his time spent with the Rebels Quartet in the 1960's.  After a stint with the Blackwood Brothers, London formed the Apostles in 1972.  In the four short years the group performed together, they would release a staggering sixteen recordings.  The grouping never had a signature vocal or ane to chart.

Some other Rebels Quartet alumni would selection up most promising new Gospel talent at the 1973 edition of the Dove Awards.  The John Mathews Family started later on John left the Rebels Quartet in 1969.  Another fun fact is that John was JD Sumner'due south blood brother-in-police force.  The grouping would garner their biggest nautical chart song in 1974 with the title rail from the album, "The Gospel According To Ole John".  The grouping would option up a couple more hits with "Hallelujah Celebration" and "The Audio Of His Proper name".

Landing at #8 on the April 1979 radio singles chart was the Galileans, "He's Coming Back Again".  The Galileans were no strangers to the Southern Gospel radio singles chart equally they were the creative person to chart the Gordon Jensen (now classic) song, "Redemption Draweth Nigh" in the top ten in 1972.

1979 (250x110)JR Baxter penned the hit single, "He's Coming Back Once again".  The Galileans would continue to release two more than albums (1979/1980) and then stopped touring one-time in 1982.

Other happenings in Apr 1979:

This week I desire to offer some other retro spotlight feature.  The year is 1973 and with the volume of music I accept from this specific year I will provide 2 parts.  I savour taking the fourth dimension and pulling out classic music from a specific period in the history of Southern Gospel music.  To let the readers a glimpse of a different era and even let myself to enjoy music that I was not around to hear when information technology was first released.  Sit down dorsum, relax and savor this glimpse of 1973.

The Cathedrals were not a superlative the Southern Gospel industry during this era of their career.  Recording for Canaan Records in the 1970's, the group released several great albums during this decade.  Younce, Payne, Tremble, Webster and  Beak Dykes were members at the time the group released The Last Sunday.  Listen to a clip of the title track.

The Downings had hit their step releasing ii albums in 1973; Greater and A Love Story…Dearest Beyond Compare.  This was about the time the Downings started flirting with the more than contemporary sounds of the day but to today standards information technology would be considered archetype Southern Gospel.  Listen to "Praise The Lamb Of God" from the Beloved Story album.

The Galileans were an all male trio that started recording in the late 1960's.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they were the only hispanic group to record and tour the Southern Gospel excursion.  Each of their recordings would include a couple of songs sung in spanish.  In 1973 the group released Plenty Of Time.  Listen to "Cordero".

The Hinsons were growing in popularity at this time.  The Gospel Singing Jubilee television program was a great goad for their success.  Their Calvary Records release in 1973 was We Promise You Gospel.  True 'Hinson' sounds can be heard on "The Upwardly Manner" featuring Larry on the second verse.

Jerry Goff spent some time with the Thrasher Brothers in the late '60s/early '70s before forming his own grouping, Jerry & the Singing Goffs.  Jerry is known today as a concert emcee and trumpet role player.  His grouping constitute success through the early '80s before disbanding.  In 1973 the grouping released Live Here This evening.

The Speers were recording some of the best music of the group's unabridged career during the early 1970'southward.  At this time frame Sue Dodge and Jeanne Johnson held down the female song parts while Harold Lane, Brock Speer and Ben Speer completed the song line-up. Touring That City was a popular song during this time catamenia and became the proper noun of the group'south album in 1973.  Listen to a great performance of "Nosotros're Not Home However Children".

JD Sumner & The Stamps were spending virtually of this decade singing with Elvis Presley.  That didn't limit to release of Gospel Music material from the Stamps.  In fact some of the all-time music of this grouping'south career came with the line-upwardly of Bill Baize, Donnie Sumner, Ed Enoch, Richard Sturben (before departing to the Oak Ridge Boys) and JD Sumner. Leaning On The Arms Of Jesus had a great song with "I've Never Been Out Of His Care".

To close out part i of the retro spotlight of 1973 is the Thrasher Brothers.  Like the Oak Ridge Boys, the Thrasher Brothers would dabble in the mainstream land music market by the terminate of the decade.  In 1973 the grouping was all the same recording for Canaan Records. Pick These was the release from this specific twelvemonth.  Listen to the group on a song titled "I'll Get My Reward".

Expect for part two in the serial tomorrow.
